What makes the Horizon standoutSydney Skyline
Designed by Harry Seidler, the 43-storey tower of the Horizon Apartments is shaped to achieve the greatest possible outlook over the sweep of Sydney Harbour, including the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The rest of the site, excavated to house a five-storey, 500-car garage, accommodates on its deck a large swimming pool and tennis court, which are overlooked by the terraces of small, low-rise, split-level apartments surrounding them.
The Apartments
The apartments were planned so that the floor space divides evenly between living areas and bedrooms, making these interchangeable. This results in the freedom to create combinations of two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments, with living areas on whichever side the resident chooses, as well as penthouses on the top two floors.
The Horizon features over 250 apartments. with a distinctive scalloped facade finished in rendered concrete. One of the ingenious things about the design is the distinctive balcony shape which undulates like a wave up the building – what Seidler called “a staggering scintillation” made of “curvilinear shapes”. This was achieved by alternating the balcony shape every second floor, a simple solution that provides a unique effect.
